No, flood insurance is not always mandatory, even in places like Naples, Florida. While flood insurance may be required by some mortgage lenders and banks, particularly in high-risk flooding areas, if your house is not financed, it is not mandatory.
Can I get flood insurance if I live in a high-risk flood area?
If your community participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), then you are eligible for flood insurance. In fact, mortgage lenders will almost never loan money for a home in a high risk flood area unless there is proof of flood insurance.
I don’t live in a high risk flood zone- do I still need flood insurance?
Absolutely! Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States. In fact, your home is more likely to be damaged from flood than from a fire, especially in Florida. We recommend that everyone, especially residents of places like our hometown of Naples, Florida protect their families and their homes with flood insurance.
Doesn't federal disaster assistance pay for flood damage?
The federal disaster relief fund is only available if the president declares a national emergency. Over 90% of natural disasters are not recognized as national emergencies. In addition, the money given by the government comes as a loan that must be paid back with interest.
Can I get flood insurance at the last minute while a flood is happening?
You can purchase flood insurance at any time, however, there is a 30-day waiting period, and you cannot get the insurance to cover a loss while it’s taking place. However, there are two exceptions to this rule:
- If your home has been re-zoned as a flood area within 13 months of purchasing your new flood insurance policy, you don’t have to wait the 30 days.
- If you get your policy as part of a mortgage loan on your home, you’ll be covered without waiting the 30 days as well.
Can I buy flood insurance if my home has been flooded before?
